Parking Availability

PARKING - IMPORTANT

We have been informed that vehicle clamping will begin from 8am on Tuesday 23 November on the entire access road (Beaumont Close) down to The Bishops Avenue. The release fee will be £170.

Students should be aware that this road is not the Institute’s property and that we have no control over the measures taken.

THE INSTITUTE

PARKING IN THE ARTS CENTRE CAR PARK

Staff members and students who use the Arts Centre will be well aware that parking space is very limited. The capacity of the car park was determined when the building was going through the planning process. The Institute was required to conform to specifications set out by the local authority, which placed emphasis on ‘green travel’, ie. discouraging car use in favour of other modes of transport. Although we recognised at the time that the supply of parking spaces would be outstripped by the demand, we were in no position to challenge the policy effectively. Although this will be no consolation to you, similar (and sometimes worse) parking problems are being experienced in other colleges across London.

When the Arts Centre opened we made attempts to regulate the use of the car park through a system of passes and some monitoring by the caretaking staff, but in the end this proved to be unworkable and extremely labour intensive. Consequently the car park now operates on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, with no distinction being made between students and staff.

Spaces are very occasionally reserved for a specific reason, and members of the caretaking and front-of-house staff will, wherever possible, help if a teacher or student has mobility problems, or needs to pick up/drop off bulky or heavy items and cannot find a space to park on site.

We realise that the situation is far from ideal, and have considered other possibilities, but to date no viable alternative has been identified. We would therefore ask for your understanding and patience, and request that if you do park on site, you do so with consideration for the other users of the car park.

November 2009

Following a review carried out in July 2008, Barnet Council has produced new proposals for the Controlled Parking Zone in East Finchley – see Plan. These are subject to the outcome of further consultations and it is anticipated that the Controlled Parking Zone, as amended, will be introduced in January 2010.
